• Pitch development—taking a written article and fleshing out a pitch for a podcast episode
• Finding and booking guests
• Preparing questions for the host and reporter
• Producing the interview sessions
• Fact checking the script
• Story structuring — the second half of the episode about invasive species was not set until the end. We struggled to find a complementary second half, but I was really interested in this notion of what "invasive" is and thought we could have a more thorough discussion the implications of our assumptions, and how we might change how our conception of moving species in a world of climate change.
• Sensitivity listening and editorial feeding — I wanted to make sure that we fore-fronted cultural assumptions that lurk under the surface of conversations about invasive species. I also didn't want to imply that just because movement in species is completely normal, that species (and humans) don't belong anywhere—indigenous communities would say otherwise. We did receive feedback from an indigenous listener that the episode was hard to listen to because they felt like we underemphasized harm invasive species do in native communities. It's only one listener email, but I've been sitting with this feedback and talking to my team about it, determined to do better next time. It feels really important for me to get indigenous voices and ways of knowing on the show to disrupt traditional narratives about science, and doing so is a work in progress.
